Travel Service Adventures NORMANDY March29-April 3, 2019
This trip is an in depth World War II experience, strictly focused on the historically important sites in the area.
Friday, 29 March 2019 Paris, France / Normandy
Upon arrival at Charles de Gaulle airport you are welcomed to Paris by your local Abercrombie & Kent Europe Guardian Angel as you exit customs into the arrivals hall, and transferred to your Paris train station.
Here you are assisted with your luggage and shown to your reserved first-class seats. Sit back, relax and enjoy your journey. When you arrive at the railway station in Caen, you are greeted by your driver and guide, who assists you with your luggage and escorts you to your awaiting private vehicle.
Spend some time discovering Caen, the capital of Lower Normandy, is reputed for its buildings built during the rule of William the Conqueror. See two fine examples of this architecture, the Romanesque abbeys that he commissioned in the 1060s. Much of the city was badly damaged during the fight for liberation in 1944, so a museum, the Mémorial de Caen, was created out of the desire to create a place for reflecting on war. Far from concentrating solely on commemoration, the Memorial presents the stakes involved in the Second World War, and the course and significance of the war. Broadening the perspective, the Memorial covers the second half of the century, and shows how the end of World War II did not signal the end of violence. After this head to your hotel in Bayeux.
From the Norman invasion of England in 1066 to the D-Day landings of 1944, Normandy has played a significant role in European history. The romantic cliffs that give way to wild and sandy beaches where the soldiers of WWII landed have now become a site of pilgrimage for thousands of war veterans and their families. Further inland there are vast expanses of cultivated land, traditional cider orchards, and lush cattle pastures ready to be explored. The famous Mont St. Michel is also situated in Normandy on a 260-foot granite rock! Honfleur, also worthy of a visit, is a charming fishing port with a historic seafaring past, as is Deauville, a prosperous seaside resort with white beaches, wooden promenades, and turreted villas that extend along the coastline. Nestled in a quiet tree-lined square in the centre of Bayeux and just a few steps away from the famous Tapestry, the Villa Lara is a bright, modern boutique hotel, offering stylish and spacious rooms overlooking the eleventh century cathedral. The 28 rooms provide a cosy atmosphere. The breakfast room and comfortable bar lounge lead onto a library complete with open fire for the colder month. Although this hotel does not have a restaurant for evening meals, its central location ensures a good choice of eateries just a short walk away. Located perfectly for sightseeing to the D-Day beaches and the rest of Normandy this hotel is ideal for the guest wanting to be centrally located and surrounded by the historical city of Bayeux. See the town of St Mere Eglise, the first to be liberated after D-Day, and now home to the Airborne Museum. Continue to Utah Beach, place of the US 4th Division landing. Often overshadowed in popular histories by “Bloody Omaha”, Utah was of vital importance to the achievement of key strategic objectives on D-Day and for the development of operations thereafter. You also learn about the US 101st Airborne Division (“The Screaming Eagles”), and Easy Company (“The Band of Brothers”). See Brecourt Manor, Angouville au Plein and St Come du Mont. Your highlight is the to visit the US Military Cemetery and Interpretation Centre at Colleville sur Mer overlooking Omaha Beach. Hotel Villa Lara Classic King/Twin

Today’s touring will include the La Cambe German Cemetery and the Pointe du Hoc which the US Rangers scaled demonstrating a triumph of planning, training and execution by elite and well-led troops. Visit Omaha Beach today, where you will examine several sites along the beach from both the German and US perspective. Hear about Operation Aquatint, a 1942 Commando raid on what was to become known as Omaha Beach at the time of D-Day. Continue to the German Gun Battery at Longues sur Mer, the most complete remaining installation of the much vaunted German “Atlantic Wall” where the guns are still in place. See also the 1st Point Fortifié W62, then the American Cemetery at St Laurent.

Continue your exploration of some of the momentous events that took place on D Day June 1944. Visit Sword Beach, the furthest east of the D Day landing beaches strategically important due to its proximately to Caen. Continue to the memorial at the famous Pegasus bridge, where the first liberators to arrive in Normandy crash landed by glider under the cover of dark and secured this vitally important bridgehead. Enjoy lunch at leisure before you continue with a visit to the Juno Beach Centre. Gold beach and Juno beach was a Canadian beach, where the Canadian troops fought fierce opposition before pushing inland to link up with British troops. Your next stop is Arromanches, one of the command centers of the whole Operation. Here you see remains of the famous Mulberry harbors still floating incongruously in the sea, part of the ½ million tons of concrete that was floated across the Channel at a speed of 4mph to supply a floating roadway from the supply ships to the shore. The memorial museum contains fascinating scale models and film footage of this great expedition and in the Arromanches 360 circular cinema you see more dramatic footage in the film telling the story of the terrible Battle of Normand.
